Time Line:
When dam goes into heat, the sire and dam receive a health clearance by a licensed Veterinarian
* dam has a vaginal smear/progesterone test
* usually between 10 and 15 days, the sire is introduced to the dam which results in the 1st mating.
* 2nd mating takes place 2 to 3 days following the 1st mating
* 3rd mating takes place 2 to 3 days following the 2nd mating
* dam is started on vitamins
Thirty days following the 3rd mating, dam has health check and ultrasound by a licensed Veterinarian
Puppies are whelped ~63 days following mating's
* birth times, lengths, weights, sex and markings are logged
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
At three days old, puppies receive their 1st health check with a licensed Veterinarian
* tails and dews are removed
* weights logged daily
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
Dam has a health check and pelvic by a licensed Veterinarian, following the whelping of the puppies
At one week, homes are confirmed and NAVHDA paperwork is completed/sent in
* tails, dews and cord are continuously checked for signs of irritation
* bowel and bladder excretions are supervised for any changes
* weights logged daily
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
At two weeks, puppies receive their 2nd health check with a licensed Veterinarian and 1st de-worming
* eye drops are administered, as eyes open (to ensure no infections)
* weights logged daily
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction takes place several times a day
At three weeks, puppies environment is expanded to outside the whelping box (other areas of the house)
* weights logged daily
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction continues to take place several times daily
At four weeks, puppies receive their 3rd health check with a licensed Veterinarian and 2nd de-worming
* paper/potty training begins
* puppies expand their areas in the house
* puppies are exposed to the field (as weather permits)
* weights logged daily
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction continues to take place several times daily
At five weeks, puppies begin the weaning process
* house training expands
* introduction to water/wading (as weather permits)
* field exposure expands (as weather permits)
* introduction to quail/chukar
* weights logged daily
* whelping box/puppy areas are continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction continues to take place several times daily
At six weeks, puppies receive their 4th health check with a licensed Veterinarian, 3rd de-worming, 1st set of puppy shots and an ID Microchip
* puppies are free to roam selected areas of the house
* introduction to the noise of .22 blank shots during field work
* increase quail/chukar exposure
* expand distance and time in field (as weather permits)
* expand water exposure and depth (as weather permits)
* crate familiarization begins
* tentative transportation arrangements to permanent homes are setup
* weights logged daily
* crates wiped out/puppy areas continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction continues to take place several times daily
At seven weeks, transportation is verified
* transportation crates are purchased and set up so puppies become familiar with them prior to departing
* paperwork is received from NAVHDA and verified
* puppies are free to roam selected areas of the house
* continued exposure to the noise of .22 blank shots during field work
* increase quail/chukar exposure
* field/water exposure is continued (as weather permits)
* field distance and time is expanded (as weather permits)
* weights logged daily
* crates wiped out/puppy areas continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction continues to take place several times daily
At eight weeks, puppies receive their 5th health check and pre-flight health certificate
* flights and travel arrangements are confirmed
* puppies are free to roam selected areas of the house
* continued exposure to the noise of .22 blank shots during field work
* increase quail/chukar exposure
* field/water exposure is continued (as weather permits)
* weights logged daily
* crates wiped out/puppy areas continuously cleaned (located in living room)
* human interaction continues to take place several times daily
* puppies are transported to the airlines
The above time line ensures a well rounded companion. Puppies are under continuous supervision from whelping until they depart to their permanent homes. Bathing is administered as needed and bedding is washed daily. Food/water bowls are washed twice daily. Photos/short videos are taken as time allows. Email/phone communications with new families/individuals begins prior to breeding and continues minimally throughout the life of the Rufnit Companion.
