ZAMIA FURFURCEA WARNING !!
WARNING: ZAMIA FURFURCEA (from the Cycad family of palms; common name is cardboard palm) has cone-like flowers, which encase red seeds that are poisonous and lethal when ingested in large amounts. Our 5 month old puppy ate a large amount of these seeds (anywhere between 4-8) and 5 hours later began to vomit profusely, indicating to us that he had eaten something poisonous. In spite of incredible medical care, which had started a slow improvement, his liver suddenly failed and he went into DIC, resulting in sudden mass internally bleeding. After three long weeks, we had to put him to rest, as there was little guarantee of his recovery.
Cooper's death was sudden and an accident. We had no idea this plant's seeds were so very dangerous. Our veterinarian found little to no published information on treatment of this type of intoxication. Cooper's autopsy results will be used in a published report on the dangers/treatment for ingestion of this plant's toxins.
Please survey your lawns and yards, as this plant is extremely common in South Florida. Because nurseries and gardener's do not inform people of the consequences, we hope that this flyer serves to make as many dog owners and parents more aware. The veterinarian that treated Cooper throughout this ordeal was Dr. Jorge Larin of South Miami Animal Clinic.
