Giving Pets as Gifts

Are you thinking about giving your beloved a hunting companion for Christmas?  Or an Easter gift for a friend or a Valentine's Day gift for your child.  Holidays are busy and tend to be overwhelming for a new addition.  Give it a bit more thought, animals given as presents often end up unwanted and discarded at the local shelter.

An alternative would be to create a gift certificate stating that you will cover the cost of a future companion.  This strategy allows the recipients of your gift to choose their own pet and to decide when they are ready to care for a pet.  The recipients of your gift will appreciate being able to make these decisions themselves.  Each type of pet is different in terms of care, feeding, behavior, cost, housing and demands on one's time.  Puppies, for instance need a lot of care.  They cannot be properly socialized and house-trained if left alone all day during the regular work hours kept by most adults.  Daily schedules typically need to be rearranged until the puppy gets adjusted, which varies with each pet.

The gift recipient needs to take into account the commitment that he/she is making to care for an animal for the rest of that animal's life.  For some animals, the commitment may be 15 years or more.  There will also be future costs such as:  food, supplies, medical attention, etc.  All types of animals are a financial commitment as well as a time commitment for the gift recipient.

Owners that are able to prepare for their pet, find they have better companions.  The gift recipient will appreciate the opportunity to properly prepare prior to taking on the responsibility of a pet.  This will be a gift that will provide memories for a lifetime.

So for now, stick with a stuffed toy to cuddle with and a gift certificate instead!

What is a Reputable Breeder

Pick A the Litter - by J.D. Wills

Alone Again

**********

There are many reputable breeders of fine upland hunting dogs throughout North America.  Unfortunately in this business like so many others, the buyer needs to be aware. Make sure that the puppy comes from a line of dogs that have good health credentials.  There should be a good history in the pedigree of dogs that perform in the field (field trials, hunt tests, etc.).  As a rule, avoid "backyard breeders."  Leave the art and science of breeding to the breeders experienced with the breed and have produced proven progeny.  Take the time to make contacts and see if there are any consistent problems reported about the particular breeder you have selected.

Remember that the least expensive part of the cost of a dog is its initial price. Veterinarian bills, feeding, kenneling, training, etc. are what really cost the most. Our advice: Do your research, you and your companion will benefit in the long run.
